David And Brooklyn Beckham Go Head-To-Head In Two Very Different Suits
The competition of a ‘dads and lads’ match hits fever pitch when one team is David Beckham, the other his son Brooklyn. Though instead of a dozen angry parents victimising a poor Sunday League ref, what we have here is a father-son tailoring fixture.
At a private dinner hosted by Rolex, Beckham Snr kept things traditional, while his eldest seemed determined to take the best-dressed tailoring crown with a more casual approach.
David has uniformed classic tailoring for years, of course. Like most things, he wears it well. Placing just as much importance on fit as fabric, Becks has long taught us the merits of a razor-sharp cut, clean lines around the collar and lapels, while generally sticking to the staples.
Which is where Brooklyn differs from his old man. The beauty of youth is the ability to experiment, and the 18-year-old has increasingly adopted the tailoring move du jour for 2019 – a relaxed suit. By losing the tie and rolling back the sleeves, Brooklyn can still flex a semi-polished look – just without the stuffiness of a regular suit. Plus, there’s bonus points for that coveted trait: effortlessness (even if he does have a team of stylists).
Granted, anyone north of 40 will always find solace in the smarter approach, but as relaxed tailoring becomes more and more a thing, is the very definition of a suit changing? And, crucially, who’s wearing it better? We’ll let you play ref on that one.
