More Than 167,000 Pounds Of Ground Beef Recalled For E. Coli
More than 167,000 pounds of ground beef are being recalled nationwide over fears of E. coli contamination.
All American Meats, a company based in Nebraska, is recalling 167,427 pounds of ground beef sold to retailers nationwide. No one has been sickened by the meat, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service discovered the E. coli on Oct. 30 and traced it back to All American Meats.
The recalled meat, which was sold in either 60-pound or 80-pound packages, was produced on October 16. The sell-by date for all the meat being recalled is Nov. 3 and the establishment number on the USDA inspection stamp is 204020. (Click here for more details.)
The USDA expressed concern that some consumers may have put the meat in their freezers and not realized it's been recalled. Those who did buy this product should throw it away or return it to the place where they bought it, the USDA advises.
E. coli is a potentially deadly bacteria that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhea and abdominal cramps two to eight days after consuming it. Most people recover within a week, but some children under five as well as older adults are at an increased risk of developing a type of kidney failure.
An E. coli outbreak has also been linked to Chipotle restaurants in the Pacific Northwest. The company has voluntarily closed 43 of its stores, including all of its locations in Washington and some in Portland, Oregon. There have been at least 22 confirmed cases of E. coli--three in Oregon and 19 in Washington.
