Potatoes are a unique product from which you can prepare a huge amount of the most varied and very tasty dishes, but even among them you can select the most outstanding ones.
Potato casserole is one of those, which, along with favorite fried potatoes and cooked mashed potatoes, periodically appears on the dining tables of the average residents of our country.
The potato casserole recipe, which stirs our mind with appetizing aroma and pleasant taste, can be found in almost every kitchen in any European country - French, Swedish, Italian, Russian and, of course, Ukrainian.
It is difficult to say who was the pioneer who came up with putting potatoes in layers, mixing them with other ingredients and baking in this form, but it is reliably known that the first similar experiments with cooking potatoes occurred 2-3 centuries ago.
Potato casserole - a dish for all times and occasions,it can be a wonderful and quick option for every day, and can also decorate any festive table, especially if it is beautifully decorated and decorated for a solemn occasion.
Plus, such a dish is perfect for lazy or very busy housewives, because for some 20-30 minutes you can get an incredibly tasty, satisfying and very appetizing dish.
If you believe that it is difficult to prepare a potato casserole, then you are deeply mistaken, because in the process there is no special wisdom, the main thing is to know the small nuances. In order for the dish to turn out really tasty, you will need fresh food, as well as a good oven, but, interestingly, some housewives manage to manage even with ordinary microwaves or multivarks.
All casseroles, which are most popular among our housewives, are conventionally divided into two large subspecies: a dish of chopped potatoes or mashed potatoes.
Each option is very tasty and provides a lot of variations, and therefore prepare them often enough. There are other varieties where raw grated potatoes are used, but such options are rarely used.
Some important recommendations
- Remember one golden rule: when collecting layers of casserole, do not make the final dish too high, because the higher it is, the longer it should be kept in the oven. As a result, often, the lower and upper potato layer begins to stick or dry, and the inner filling remains half-baked.
- Pay special attention to the dressing, which potato casserole is poured during the cooking process. The most commonly used milk, cream or sour cream, whipped with eggs, there is another version of the sauce - mayonnaise, mixed with water and a small amount of spices. You can use any other types of sauce, as long as the ingredients are well combined with each other. To make the casserole juicy, the sauce must be poured during the whole cooking process.

Casserole recipe with minced meat and mashed potatoes
This version of this dish has a large number of its own fans, mashed meat casserole with some minced meat, most often served for lunch or dinner in kindergartens, schools, sanatoriums and dispensaries, where she met with great enthusiasm.
But if you cook this dish at home, you can notice that it turns out even tastier and more appetizing. What do we need for this?
- potatoes - 1 kg;
- milk - 100 ml;
- egg - 1 piece;
- breadcrumbs - 2 tbsp. spoons;
- butter - 50 g;
- onions - 1 pc .;
- sunflower oil - 2 tbsp. spoons;
- minced meat (optional) - 500 g;
We begin with potatoes: it needs to be cleaned and boiled, and while it is brewed, it is possible to be engaged in forcemeat. To do this, clean, chop and fry onions when it is covered with a golden crust, lay ground meat in the pan, add salt and fry until ready, and you can add a little water so that the stuffing doesn’t crumble.
When the potatoes are cooked, you can start creating mashed potatoes: drain the water from the pan, leaving very little at the bottom. After that, carefully mash the potatoes, add one egg, hot milk and butter, still knead well again.
The next stage is laying out layers, for this we need a baking dish. It must first be oiled, and then lay out the first potato layer, half of the cooked mashed potatoes is enough. On the resulting potato base, lay out the roasted minced meat, spread it in an even layer, slightly pressing into the potato.
The last layer is again potato, lay it out, slightly pressing into the previous one so that our casserole does not fall apart when we start cutting it into portions. The last stage - powdered breadcrumbs, and to get a golden appetizing crust on top, the surface of the casserole can be smeared with egg yolk.
It remains to put our dish in the oven at a temperature of 180-200 °, bake about 30 minutes until a beautiful crust. Serve this dish with a sauce of tomato paste or sour cream.
Potato casserole recipe with minced meat and mushrooms
As we have said, in the process of cooking such a dish, you can use a variety of products, such as mushrooms and cheese.
You can choose exactly those mushrooms that you personally like, not necessarily it should be mushrooms,however, any other type is better not only to pre-rinse, but also to boil until ready. What do we need?
- potatoes - 800 g;
- mushrooms - 600 g;
- cheese - 150 g;
- egg - 1 piece;
- onions - 3 pcs .;
- flour - 2 tbsp. spoons;
- sour cream or mayonnaise;
- salt, ground pepper;
- sunflower oil.
Potatoes are pre-cleaned, washed, poured with water and cook until ready, without forgetting salt. While the potatoes are boiled, peel and chop the onion into half rings, and then fry it in sunflower oil.
After golden crust appears, add mushrooms to the pan, do not forget to salt and pepper, fry for another 10 minutes, and then remove from heat.
At this time, the potatoes are boiled, we cut it into thin slices or straws, as you like, and then half of the first layer is laid out in a baking dish. In a separate plate, rub the cheese on a coarse grater, and mix the sour cream with spices and lubricate the first layer of potatoes with it.
The next layer is mushrooms with onions, we lay them out and lightly press down to the potato base, and then once again grease with sour cream and spices. Then we lay out the remaining potatoes, sprinkle cheese on top and send the dish to the preheated oven for half an hour at 180 °. At the end of time, the casserole is ready, enjoy your meal!
