What is mononucleosis?
Due to the abundance of all kinds of infectious diseases, what is mononucleosis is, perhaps, only doctors and those who suffered it are aware. Despite the fact that the course of the disease is rather unpleasant, it does not have an epidemiological nature, so it does not require quarantine. Usually, people tolerate a light form, and having transferred, they acquire a stable immunity. However, to know what mononucleosis is, how it manifests itself and how it is treated is still worth it in order to avoid complications.
What causes the disease
Mononucleosis spawns the herpes virus IV, and it is transmitted with saliva. Most often the infection occurs through kisses, general washing facilities, toys, but airborne transmission is also possible. The virus does not have high activity, so long-term contact with its carrier is needed for the infection. Up to two years, children do not get sick with mononucleosis; if it happens, they endure it almost unnoticed. People older than 40 already have immunity to it.
Mononucleosis, breaking the incubation period, affects all the lymph nodes in the human body. Some are affected very weakly, others - as much as possible, but the virus "settles" in all. The neck is most affected. Therefore, mononucleosis is accompanied by angina and adenoid edema. Due to the latter, a person (even a child) has a loud night snore, it becomes difficult to swallow, there is a general lethargy. Liver and spleen suffer no less; there are even isolated cases of its rupture due to the course of the disease.
If infectious mononucleosis proceeds in a standard manner, that is, in a mild form, then the patient is usually prescribed acyclovir and interferon. At the same time, symptoms are removed, that is, using conventional methods they remove a runny nose and inflammatory processes in the throat. In the case of high fever (it is also not uncommon in the acute period of this disease), it is knocked down with paracetamol or nise. Doctors do not advise using aspirin - there is a danger of Reye’s syndrome in children and adolescents. Of course, this disease is extremely rare, but it is so severe that doctors reinsure themselves and prescribe drugs that do not contain acetylsalicylic acid.
If mononucleosis is accompanied by complications, a course of antibiotics is given - most often ampicillin. Despite the fact that in almost all patients with mononucleosis, this drug causes a rash (the nature of the phenomenon has not yet been clarified), it gives the best results from the whole range.
Recovery after treatment
A person, and especially a child, who has learned about himself what mononucleosis is, comes out of a very weakened disease. For a time, until the temperature stabilizes and the pain in the throat completely disappears, rest and increased pressure is prescribed, but dietary food is required to restore impaired immunity. Sports and lifting any weight is prohibited for a week after discharge, to eliminate the possibility of rupture of the spleen. This measure is taken even when an increase in the organ has not been noted.
It is also necessary to take into account that the herpes virus IV is oncogeneally active, although it does not manifest itself as such too often. However, if the residual effects of mononucleosis in the blood are kept for a long time, the child is necessarily placed under the supervision of a hematologist.
